Danish helmer Henrik Ruben Genz’s World War I drama Erna at War is now filming in Estonia.
It follows the story of a strong woman called Erna (Trine Dyrholm), who goes to war dressed as a man to protect her intellectually disabled son Kalle (Sylvester Byder), called up to fight. Ulrich Thomsen plays the officer Mayer who enrols Kalle against Erna’s wishes, and Anders W. Berthelsen plays the blacksmith Anton whom she falls in love with.
The script, penned by Bo Hr. Hansen, is an adaptation of Erling Jepsen’s novel of the same name. Previously, Genz adapted Jepsen’s literary work in Terribly Happy (2008) and Excuse Me (2012). Erna at War is being produced by Birgitte Hald and Nynne Selin Eidnes for Nimbus Film, and it is expected to be released in September 2020.
